What to see
Stops that solve a real planning problem.
South Maui has enough beaches that a list gets useless fast. These stops are here because they change the plan: lifeguards, fees, facilities, reservations, conservation rules, or heat.
Kihei / 1.5-3 hr
Kamaʻole beach morning
Use Kamaʻole I, II, or III as the practical South Maui beach anchor: sand, restrooms, showers, lifeguards, and quick food access nearby.
Reservation or fee: If you use Kamaʻole I or III paved lots, start a Park Maui parking session; non-residents pay standard visitor parking rates.
Conditions: Ask a lifeguard before snorkeling or swimming when the surf, currents, or shorebreak look stronger than expected.

Kalama Park reset
A 36-acre oceanfront county park with courts, fields, picnic space, playground, skate park, parking, restrooms, and a 10 PM closing time.
Skip if late: Skip as a midday stop if your real goal is Wailea/Mākena; use it as a before-dinner reset instead.

Offshore / 4-5 hr
Molokini snorkel or dive tour
A boat-only snorkel or dive block to the crescent-shaped Molokini Shoal Marine Life Conservation District off South Maui.
Reservation or fee: Book the operator and departure time in advance; access is by boat only, and commercial activity in the MLCD is permit-controlled.
Conditions: Afternoon winds and currents can matter around Molokini, so check marine weather and expect operators to adjust the day.

Wailea / 45-120 min
Wailea beaches and beach path
Use Wailea for a lower-friction walk between resort beaches, especially Ulua, Polo, and Wailea Beach when the group wants scenery without another long drive.
Skip if late: Skip the full walk if dinner or activity reservations are fixed; choose one beach access and keep the day relaxed.

Makena / 1-3 hr
Mākena State Park and Big Beach
A large wildland beach park with Oneloa/Big Beach, Oneuli/Black Sand Beach, posted hours, paid non-resident entry and parking, and no drinking water.
Reservation or fee: Non-residents pay per-person entry plus vehicle parking; pay at kiosks or through the posted online parking option.
Conditions: DLNR posts a direct shorebreak warning. Treat Big Beach as a conditions-first stop, not an automatic swim.

ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve
A fragile natural area reserve at southwest Maui with lava fields, protected marine ecosystems, posted visiting hours, and a day-use parking fee.
Reservation or fee: Pay the posted day-use vehicle fee by debit or credit card; keep to open areas and posted access.
Conditions: Skip ocean entry when wind, current, or visibility are poor, and never enter closed anchialine-pool areas.

Makena / 1-3 hr out-and-back
Hoapili Trail from Keoneʻōʻio
A lava-coast hike beyond Wailea/Mākena, listed by Nā Ala Hele and described by GoHawaii as reaching toward Kanaio Beach after leaving the coast.
Conditions: Expect exposed lava, limited shade, rough footing, and a dry south-side microclimate; carry more water than feels convenient.
Skip if late: Skip if you did not start early, if everyone is already sun-tired, or if the car cannot handle the end-of-road conditions comfortably.

Kīhei Fourth Friday
Maui County lists Kīhei Fourth Friday as the active Friday Town Party, with food trucks and tents, live music, a vendor area, a keiki zone, and free nearby parking notes.
Skip if late: Skip if it is not the fourth Friday or if the group needs a quiet dinner after a long sun-and-ocean day.
